Warsaw
Warsaw is Poland’s largest city and an economic, political, and cultural centre. The symbol of the city is the Mermaid. Warsaw is also known as the “phoenix city” because it was rebuilt after the extensive damage it suffered from Second World War, during which 85% of its buildings were destroyed. Warsaw's palaces, churches are representatives of nearly every European architectural style and historical period. The city has wonderful examples of architecture from the gothic, renaissance, baroque and neoclassical periods, all of which are located within walking distance of the town centre. The most know tourist attraction is the Old Town, reconstructed after World War II, with Royal Castle, King Zygmunt’s Column, Market Square and the Barbican. The fourth of Warsaw is covered by parkland.
